Covering an area of 1 hectare, this islet is located in the heart of Brussels’ historical city centre, halfway between Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and Place des Martyrs. It is legendary for the succession of architects who created it, and its use solely as offices. The project proposes the renovation of four existing buildings and the construction of five new buildings with a total area of 50,000 square metres (30,000 square metres of which is housing). The landmark building, designed by famous architect Alfred Chambon (1847–1928) and containing the offices of BNP Paribas Fortis (originally CGER), has been converted back into homes, while the other buildings retain their function as offices. Alongside these, the new buildings include various types of housing, from student accommodation to luxury apartments. This reconstituted islet is structured around an enormous garden space of 2,500 square metres, which opens up to the surrounding district and its public open spaces. The new Chambon islet joins heritage and contemporary architecture, composing volumes in rhythm, high and low, directly inspired by the originality, the proportions, and the ‘rigour’ of Chambon’s oeuvre. The use of light-coloured stone and bronze-coloured metal for the new buildings mimics the existing buildings, creating harmony within and continuity on-site as well as with the neighbourhood.
