This project was the second stage of a larger project encompassing the complete restoration of the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, the key heritage site in the city centre of Brussels and the major commercial and cultural thoroughfare. The first stage of the project, concerning the renovation of the canopies and the façades of this typical 19th-century covered arcade, received the Europa Nostra prize in 1999. The second stage,, completed in 2005, is divided into two parts: Firstly, the creation under the Galerie de la Reine of an exhibition space called 'Bruxelles en scène' (Brussels on stage), which also enabled modernisation of the drains and consolidation of the foundations of the building. Secondly, the restoration and renovation of the Théâtre du Vaudeville, as well as the re-fitting of shops and homes. The theatre, built in 1884 in the structure of a covered market, had its auditorium restored with its original design, and its Art-Deco period reception areas. The renovation brought it into line with modern building standards for safety and comfort, as well as creating a multi-purpose venue, which can accommodate not only theatre performances but also lectures, chamber music concerts, cabaret shows and solo acts.
