STATUS
Built
The Souverain 23 project preserves the 1970s architecture of Souverain 25, featuring four residential buildings in an open book shape. It uses contrasting materials like bronze aluminum and concrete, incorporating green roofs and sustainable solutions.
The Souverain 23 project preserves the architectural heritage of the 1970s Souverain 25 building, located at 25 Boulevard du Souverain, Brussels. Designed by Pierre Dufau and René Stapels, the original building features a striking cross shape of steel, concrete, and glass, situated next to the Ten Reuken ponds and Soignes Forest.
The new development adapts the existing building into a residential complex, maintaining the same architectural form while integrating modern housing needs. The design consists of four buildings arranged in the shape of an open book, inspired by the cruciform layout of the original Souverain 25. The use of materials ensures continuity with the original structure, including bronze anodized aluminum, smoked glass, and vertical bronze-colored railings for living areas and terraces. Other façades will use polished concrete, blue stone, or dark brick, creating a strong contrast with the natural environment and enhancing the geometry of the buildings.
The façades are oriented south and west to capture natural light and maximize views. Green roofs will provide recreational space and privacy for residents. The parking facility will be located on two underground levels, and the lower basement floors (-3 and -4) could be used for stormwater retention and rainwater storage.
The Souverain 23 project combines modern living with respect for its historical and environmental context, offering an elegant and sustainable residential solution.
